scale, heart monitor and blade n clips for the cord. We supplied towels and a friend loaned me an exercise ball. That’s it.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; I couldn’t sit still. It felt right even in the Hanoi heat and humidity.

Then Thursday night Sherman and I had the usual conversation, “When will he come? You think he’ll be late? I hope he’s early. I can’t wait to see his face!” AND that night I awoke with a strong abdominal pain. I hit the bed with my fist. Wow. That hurt. A contraction? It was totally different from the persistent minor cramping. I checked my phone; it was 1am. Then another. Strong. I checked my phone, 1:05. A big smile came over me. Could this be it? Five minutes passed, another. They were really strong right from the start. I woke Sherm to say that I needed to get out of bed and walk. He was excited but also decided to pace himself and keep sleeping in case things went on for hours. So at 1:15am I went outside to walk through the village. I was so excited but yet unsure because the contractions might just fade away. But their strength told me otherwise. At 1:30 I called Bettina just to warn her that I might be in labor. She said she would come but I also worried that she would just end up driving 45 minutes to our house only to sit and wait in the middle of the night. I came back inside because Bettina suggested resting between contractions to save energy. Sherm tried to get me to do the relaxation exercises we had practiced from The Bradley Method. But I could not lie in a bed and relax the way we had practiced. These were not ‘building up contractions’. They were strong and purposeful. I sat down and rocked on the exercise ball. It was wonderful. I played music but soon couldn’t hear the music. Bettina arrived and examined me. I was 9cm already. Amazing. I was ecstatic. It’s such an exciting feeling to know you’re so close to meeting your son.

A few minutes later, on the exercise ball I felt a slight need to bear down. I didn’t recognize it as the pushing stage so didn’t tell anyone. But as I was on that ball, Zachary’s head started to push out all on it’s own. With the birth of my other babies, there was a small medical team yelling, “Push! Push harder! Come on, you can do it. You’re not pushing hard enough!” But when you’re lying on a bed with your feet in stirrups it seems you are going against gravity and attempting to push a baby UP out of you rather than down. Also, with the other babies I pushed when told and so the pushing stage lasted a long time and I wore myself out with early pushing. This time, being in upright position, gravity and the contractions moved Zachary out as the natural process intended. I told Bettina, “Something’s coming. Something’s coming out.” I wasn’t sure what was happening. She reassured me and asked me to come off the ball. I squatted on the floor leaning cheek to cheek onto Sherman. He supported my weight as Zachary made his way out. The pain was amazing. I couldn’t see much. And I didn’t fully comprehend when Bettina said, “I see his eye. He’s looking at me.” I asked her if I could push and she agreed and then BLOOP! Out came his head and one hand. A moment later and BLOOP BLOOP! Out came the entire little baby. Bettina was behind me on the floor waiting to catch him.

What? That was it? All pain ceased. I was elated to realize he was out and it was all over. I couldn’t believe it was that quick. Bettina, who was behind me, passed Zachary through my knees and up to Sherman. Sherman held him in astonishment. No doctor, no episiotomy, no forceps (as with Allison), no vacuum (as with Hannah). Here he was. 275 days of pregnancy culminating in a glorious end. August 13, 2010. 2:45am.

With an amazing amount of energy and joy I sat down on my own bed, still connected to my son. Bettina let us get over the shock and then proceeded to clip the cord and let Sherm make the cut. Then we waited for my placenta to detach. I didn’t remember this stage of delivery with the other two but this time everything was so raw and we were such a part of every moment. Meanwhile Bettina wiped Zachary down, gave him a 9, 9, 10 Apgar score, weighed him at 2.9kgs/6.4lbs and roughly measured his length, which I forgot. Then he settled down for some skin contact and began nursing but he wasn’t too interested yet.

After a few more contractions the placenta plopped out and Bettina examined it to make sure all parts were released. Sherm and I stared at it in amazement. Bettina showed us what she was looking for and gave us a mini biology lesson in… placenta parts. Normally I love that sort of thing but I was a bit grossed out since it was MY placenta. Ewww! She lifted a clear-ish pice of material up off the placenta and showed me Zachary’s amniotic sac and also showed us the three tubes in an umbilical cord that are for nutrients, oxygen and waste. There was the beginning of life right before our eyes.

So all our prayer requests had been answered and answered beyond our own expectations. We never had to decide what to do with the girls since they slept through the whole thing right next door in their own beds. I showered and then about 3:30am Sherman and I walked right out of the village with Zachary in our arms. We caught a taxi and headed for the hospital where I received stitches for a small tear, Zachary received his Hep B and Vitamin K shot and Sherm received the necessary paper work for the birth certificate. As foreigners having a home birth in Vietnam we need papers from the hospital in order to receive a birth certificate, and therefore a Birth Abroad Certificate from the US Consulate. When we got back home the girls were still asleep.

Allison awoke first and met me in the hallway telling me her Superman costume had been too hot and that’s why she wasn’t wearing any clothes. What a goof ball! I told her to go look and my bed and see the surprise there. As soon as she saw her brother she walked right back out of the room. I wasn’t sure why she did that but apparently she had gone to his room to retrieve a book. She came back with Pat the Bunny and started reading to him right away. So sweet.

Hannah later woke up and when she saw her brother she broke into tears asking, “Why didn’t you wake me up? I wanted to see him come out.” She was excited, disappointed and confused. She knows his coming means big adjustments in our household. After a cuddle, she was fine and wanted to hold her baby. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: Hannah at one point thought they were webs for monster size spiders. They are super tangled and often hang so low I have to remind the kids to step over them and be sure not to touch them. This week however, the city is cleaning them up by gathering them up into tidy bundles using those awesome plastic ties. This isn't too common for us since cleaning lettuce is so very time consuming. We generally cook our greens - and they are super yummy that way but Sherm and I were so enjoying our Fresh Salad. Sherm was so curious where I found fresh salad and I was telling him all about the new store that sells it in a bag called "European Salad". Just as we were pushing big wads of salads into our mouths I noticed The Visitor and screamed! Our visitor had made it through my so called rigorous washing and still landed happily on our plate still munching away. He was just traveling about. We didn't finish the salad that night.

Beautiful Allison

Yes, she's in her pajamas outside. She's been dreaming of Barbies all year but I so hesitated to ever purchase one of those dolls! Finally, Sherm and I agreed we'd get her one. Little did we know her friends also got her some so now there is a collection of four Barbies in our home and lots of fun play going round. She loves being six and is doing more chores round the house and is also determined to eat gobs until it results in her being tall 'just like Barbie'. There are signs of progress all around us in Hanoi and the zoo is no exception. The elephant house is being upgraded and it appears the aviaries are getting a makeover too. I think I was most interested in signs of progress for the average joe. A few years ago, not many people had their own camera so photographers like the lady picture above with the SLR would do brisk business by taking your photo, then having it developed, laminated and framed (not unlike US amusement parks). As in many developing countries, there was a technological leapfrog past film cameras to the point where many families have a digital camera or smart phone with a camera. But don't feel too bad for the freelance photographers: I even saw one of them with a digital SLR! so they're getting a slice of the progress pie too.

Allison liked the elephants and the hippo the best. We ate Peking Duck-flavoured chips, which are actually pretty good.

Allison had such a full and fun day that she fell asleep at the dinner table. - sc)

Now she is often found on Sherm's pillow. But don't worry, she's all cleaned up, got her shots, de-flead and is so very loving! She craves attention and gets plenty. Right now she is out at the park with Hannah and Allison. They are all three dressed up as princesses. Sandy is wearing her pink chiffon cape. The girls can do anything to this dog and she happily complies.

She is not potty trained yet so her bouts in the house are only a couple hrs at a time. But she's catching on.

Vietnam Dong

This afternoon I was at the bank and I was astounded by the amount of cash going around. Bricks and bricks of cash were being passed back and forth from tellers and customers. Can you imagine living in a cash society where checks and credit cards don't exist? Debit cards were introduced a couple years ago and people do tend to do direct deposit more frequently but really most things are done in cash still: rent, purchasing a house, hospital bills, buying a motorbike, etc! So when you see a poor frail looking granny with her cone hat on, don't assume her little plastic bag just contains a fish from the market. She could have three bricks of 500,000 Dong in there. Plus she could probably karate chop your leg off!

The largest bill now is the 500,000 pictured above. It's worth about $28. The money'''s called Dong but pronounced Dome.

And if you have a gambling problem I don't suggest you go to the bank I went to today. They just have stacks of money laying all around on the tables and floor, vault doors lay wide open and security seems a little lazy but then maybe the security is so discrete I couldn't detect it.

Moving along alright

This is a great picture. Not only is it a snap shot of the traffic but it also has a sign for the hilarious Hafasco Company. Say that slowly: Hafasco (ie, not where you go if you want quality - sc)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oetF3UTIwbc
This isn't my footage but it's a good sample of the roads now days. Click it. Picture us in it. Crazy!

In the year we've been gone, traffic has becoming down right scary. When we first arrived in Vietnam more than 7 years ago motorbikes were king of the road with bicycles, more numerous by far, being the little guy making way for the zooming scooters. We were cyclists at the time and for our first two years. When we graduated to motorbikes we joined the big kings of the road and though traffic was hectic, it wasn't scary. Once you see through the chaos you notice a flow like blood cells squeezing through a vein.

Now, cars are king of the road and those of us on motorbike must give way or be squashed. Traffic is more hectic. Horns are inhumanely loud. But the cars aren't the scary ones it's the intercity buses that turn my body cold and send pains of fear throughout my legs when they literally push me forward with their screams and 'taps'.

It took me a week to venture out on my motorbike. A week and a half to drive with Hannah on the front. And two weeks to put both girls on the bike with me. But we did it today. We made it. No huge scares, just lots of medium scares. Allison rode in the front of me. Hannah rode in the back.

The buses screamed at us all along the way, but the girls remained calm and chatted the whole way! I pretended to be calm and did not answer any of their questions. My eyes could only focus on all the pedestrians walking in front of us, the other motorbike drivers zig-zagging in and out, the cars pushing us over and the buses bullying us.

We are back to being real road Hanoians.

First Day of School

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u9SWIL781q8/SsnyBbgsMqI/AAAAAAAAAEY/g9qjcFUWbVs/s400/IMG_0920.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389104535504171682" />
It's October but today was our first official day of Homeschooling in Vietnam. It turned out great and Hannah asked if we could carry on after lunch. We really only need to work until lunch and then she's free to do her 'chores' and play outside. It was really cute though when Hannah said, "Today I felt like we were back in Texas! I like Homeschool!"

We started out with our Bible Memory work. Both girls can do the same activities for Bible, art and read aloud but then they have separate work for language and maths.

Tomorrow morning will be Vietnamese language preschool, but I think Allison will have to miss out due to a fever today. What a bummer. She's super excited about taking the bus home.

In other news, I took my motorbike for a spin. Like the name suggests, it is a celebration of the mid-point of autumn according to the lunar calendar. It's also known as the moon festival since that's when the moon is the fullest, hence the eponymous moon cakes that are made especially for the ocassion. For kids, it's kind of like Hallowe'en and Christmas rolled into one: they dress up and get lots of candy, and they get lots of toys too. Not a bad deal.

Hannah and Allison had a great time, but faded fast at 7:30 pm. They're feeling more and more at home here in Hanoi. The house is cleaned up and set up to just about how we want it. On Monday, they'll start homeschool and Tuesday will go to Ohana, their Vietnamese kindergarden (they had a great reunion with their former teachers when we went to enroll them last week). Things have been going well. - sc

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_u9SWIL781q8/SsdZ3QDqaRI/AAAAAAAAAD4/Gp7Kj7P7vtY/s400/IMG_0913.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388374284910094610" style="display: block; Speaking English in stores? Seeing friends from Northwood? Enjoying that central air-conditioning? Wow, seems so far away.

So this is our crazy new bathtub. We didn't have a bathtub last time we lived here and as you can see we are double blessed because for some reason there are two taps! One for each girl? hmmm The bathtub also moves around. You can scoot it around the bathroom and position it any way you want. The main thing is to make sure you got it under the tap when the water is on.

We love our new place. Right now it's a big grungy but when i get a fresh coat of paint on the walls and some pretty curtains I'll post pictures. Though in stating how we like our new place, I keep in mind that Allison keeps requesting to go back to Texas. She says Texas is better than Vietnam. But then she sees the benefits of Vietnam when I take her to the backyard to pick a banana from our own banana tree and let her feed it to the deer that live across the street. How cool is that!

Gotta get out

Today Hannah and I made a calender so she could see what's going on before we leave for Viet Nam and even understand that we are returning really soon. When we walked in Hannah saw peanut shells all over the floor there and exclaimed, "This place is rocking!"

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_u9SWIL781q8/Sq1xQAj2J9I/AAAAAAAAAC8/1XnjlkGdjUg/s320/IMG_0128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381081649619806162" />

We had so much fun eating there as a family, just the four of us. These things helped us settle in immediately and we are so thankful for all the love represented in them. Now we'd like to pass these furnishings on.
